V-ID wants to end document fraud with blockchain powered validation. But how does this validation actually work?
The principle behind validation and verification with V-ID
The principle behind V-ID’s tech is based on two parties, namely the publisher and the recipient. The publisher validates the file, and the recipient verifies the file. On the path from the publisher to the recipient, there are lots of opportunities for the file to lose its integrity. A file that is created in a typical business process goes through lots of devices, third party networks, passes numerous people with access to it and is copied multiple times.
V-ID’s validation locks the fingerprint of the file in the blockchain before it starts the journey to the recipient. The verification process enables anyone to check the integrity of the file anytime during its journey.
V-ID’s activities are B2B at the moment. The V-ID platform is up and running at organisations in marine, fiber, education, medical and defence industries.
This live demo shows how fast and easy V-ID file verification works. As you can see, a validated file can be verified in 5 seconds by any recipient with internet access.
So, with verification covered, let’s look at validation. Specifically, the core challenge of it, namely: How can you know that the file you are verifying was validated by the actual rightful person or entity that represents the publishing organisation? Or in other words, how can V-ID be sure that validated files are not fakes? This is where V-ID’s validation service comes in.
Validation can take place in two ways: validation by a certified V-ID employee and self-validation. The first way is presently used for V-ID’s client base.
Validation by a V-ID employee
Remote validation (level 1)
The issuing organization submits the files to V-ID using a secure upload connection. V-ID then validates the files.
On-site validation (level 2)
A V-ID employee validates the files at the issuing organization’s location.
On-site validation under notary supervision (level 3)
A V-ID employee validates the files on-site at the issuing organization’s location, with a notary present to supervise the process.
This method allows an employee of the issuing organization to validate files at any time. First, an employee of the publishing organization is appointed to become a Validator. This person’s identity is then established on site by a V-ID agent and V-ID-appointed notary. After V-ID has created the Validator’s profile on the platform, he or she is able to log in at a Validation Terminal. The Validation Terminal has a user friendly interface, where files that need to be validated can simply be submitted by dragging and dropping.
